Alyssa Solomon’s heroics propel NU to comeback victory vs FEU
National University (NU) showcased their championship composure by defeating Far Eastern University (FEU) in a thrilling five-set match, 25-15, 23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-8, maintaining their perfect record in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Sunday, February 23, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Alyssa Solomon led the charge for the Lady Bulldogs with 23 points, including 19 kills and four blocks to improve their record to 3-0.
"As it was getting closer, I really didn’t want them to win the game. We really needed to have at least one of us, or all of us, to fight and give everything we’ve got," said Solomon.
"We told each other not to let all the hard work we put in these past weeks go to waste. We really prepared for this FEU game, so we told each other not to give up easily."
After dropping two closely contested sets, NU regained its composure in the fourth set, engaging in a tense back-and-forth with FEU. Despite a strong push from the Lady Tamaraws, including two set points saved by Faida Bakanke and Jaz Ellarina, NU clinched the set 25-23 after Bakanke's attack sailed wide, forcing a decider.
In the fifth set, NU took control with a 5-0 run, breaking a 3-3 tie to pull ahead 8-3. Despite a brief rally from FEU, the Lady Bulldogs remained composed and extended their lead, finishing the match with a commanding 15-8 scoreline.
Two-time MVP Bella Belen backstopped Solomon’s efforts, adding 21 points with 13 spikes, seven aces, and one block, while outside hitter Vange Alinsug contributed 19 points. Lams Lamina delivered 23 excellent sets to keep the team on track.
Jean Asis led FEU's efforts with 20 points, while team captain Tine Ubaldo recorded 21 excellent sets. With the loss, FEU fell to a 1-2 record early in the season.
