Chery Tiggo sweeps ZUS Coffee to secure quarterfinal slot
The Chery Tiggo Crossovers secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference after breezing past the winless ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles on Saturday, August 17, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Crossovers bounced back from their previous loss to the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, improving their record to 5-2 and claiming solo fourth place after hammering the Thundebelles in a commanding straight-sets victory, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19.
With the quarters in mind, coach Kungfu Reyes said they will try harder in training, which they expect to show in matches.
“Even though we won, there are still many adjustments to be made,” Reyes said. “We will review our plays for the quarters. While our play patterns were effective today, we need to address some lapses in our training sessions.”
American import Khat Bell led the charge for the Crossovers, erupting a game-high 28 points anchored on 24 attacks and four blocks together with seven receptions.
Mylene Paat stepped up for Ara Galang, who was sidelined due to a minor injury, chipping in 11 markers along with two blocks and one ace to lead the local support, while Cess Robles added seven.
Meanwhile, Japanese reinforcement Asaka Tamaru paced the losing Thunderbelles with 12 points and nine receptions, while middle blocker Michelle Gamit scored nine.
The Crossovers will face Petro Gazz Angels in their final game of the preliminaries on Thursday, August 22, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City, while the Thunderbelles will look to end their campaign with a victory against the Creamline Cool Smashers, also on Thursday.
