Creamline knocks off Petro Gazz, forges semis duel with Cignal
The Creamline Cool Smashers clipped Petro Gazz Angels’ wings in the knockout quarterfinals of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference with a decisive victory.
Despite being undermanned, Creamline secured the final spot in the semifinals after toppling the two-time Reinforced Conference defending champion Petro Gazz in straight-set wins, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Tuesday, August 27.
The Cool Smashers dominated what was expected to be a close contest, thanks to strong performances from Erica Staunton and Bernadeth Pons.
"We will celebrate and will rest for a while. We are happy since we won in today's knockout game. We hope to continue winning," head coach Sherwin Meneses told the press after the game.
American reinforcement Staunton unloaded 19 points from 16 attacks and three blocks, and added seven excellent receptions. Pons chipped in 16 markers anchored from 15 attacks and an ace to lift Creamline to a three-game win streak ahead of the semifinals.
Veteran opposite spiker Michelle Gumabao contributed 11 points, while Jeanette Panaga, Bea De Leon, and Kyle Negrito each added five markers.
Wilma Salas and reigning All-Filipino Conference MVP Brooke Van Sickle each scored 18 points for Petro Gazz, with Salas adding 11 excellent digs and five excellent receptions.
No other Petro Gazz player reached double digits in this crucial match, with team captain Remy Palma chiming in seven markers in the loss.
Creamline will go against the Cignal HD Spikers on Thursday, August 29, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
