Gonzaga’s trust in ZUS Coffee’s potential pays off in huge upset
Jovelyn Gonzaga has always believed in the potential of ZUS Coffee, and on Tuesday night, March 18, the Thunderbelles validated her faith with one of the most shocking upsets in Premier Volleyball League (PVL) history.
Facing a powerhouse Petro Gazz squad riding a dominant 10-game winning streak, the Thunderbelles played with heart and resilience, pulling off a stunning straight-sets victory, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25, in Game 1 of the 2024-25 All-Filipino Conference Quarterfinals at the PhilSports Arena.
Gonzaga, who has always believed in the team’s potential, played a key role in the victory, capping the match with a decisive block on Myla Pablo.
Despite being considered the underdogs, Gonzaga never doubted the team’s capability to compete at the highest level.
"Even before I joined ZUS Coffee, I already knew this team had great potential," Gonzaga shared. "I always remind my teammates that we can go far if we believe in ourselves."
For Gonzaga, it was their unselfish style of play that paved the way for their monumental win.
"I'm speechless. The teamwork we showed was incredible," said the veteran leader. "Everyone played selflessly—we moved and fought for each other, for the team, and for our coaches."
ZUS Coffee’s defensive resilience and collective effort allowed them to outlast the seasoned Angels, with Gonzaga leading the charge on both offense and at the net.
While the victory was a significant milestone, Gonzaga knows the job is far from over.
"We will celebrate this win, but we need to work even harder for Game 2," she emphasized. "There’s no room for complacency. Whatever we showed today, we have to double it on Saturday."
With the momentum on their side, ZUS Coffee will look to close out the series and book a historic semifinal appearance in Game 2 on March 22 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
