New Zealand-Bluefire Valkyries secure win in WMPBL opening

The New Zealand-Bluefire Valkyries snatched a 54-51 victory over the Cavite-Tol Patriots in the main game of the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (WMPBL) opening on Sunday, January 19, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

La Salle great Snow Peñaranda of the Valkyries made history by being the first WMPBL player who registered a double-double, scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

In the final minute of the game, Camerooninan Fina Tchuido sank two crucial free throws to seal the victory for New Zealand-Bluefire.

Meanwhile, Charmaine Lepardo was the lone double-digit scorer for Cavite with 11 points.
